Discover Our Journey: The Inspiring History of Columbia Animal Shelter and Its Commitment to Animal Welfare.
Driven by a fervent love for animals and passion for serving her community, Judy McKonly dreamed about establishing the best shelter for cats in the nation. Her goal was to open this shelter in Columbia, Pennsylvania, the town she called home.
Unfortunately, Judy passed away before she saw her dream become reality. After her passing, Judy’s family was inspired to honor her legacy and bring her dream to fulfi llment. They purchased the Vigilant Fire Hall and repurposed the building to house the shelter, known today as the Columbia Animal Shelter. Judy’s lifelong dream was fulfilled in early 2019 when the shelter opened its doors. Inside is modern equipment, spacious housing for the cats, and a bright, roomy space where visitors can interact with the cats available for adoption.
The Columbia Animal Shelter offers adoptions and a low-cost wellness clinic that offers spay and neuter plus countless other routine health services. Additionally, the shelter hosts youth programs and informational seminars. Part of Judy’s vision was to provide new pet parents with the education and resources to care for their new best friend. We have faith that Judy smiles every time she looks down at the shelter and sees the work we do.
Our goal is to honor Judy’s legacy and keep her dream alive.
